The malediction ward is a mage-class shield that requires at least 60 Defence to wield. The ward is created from three components: the Malediction shard 1, Malediction shard 2 and Malediction shard 3, all dropped by different bosses within the wilderness (Shard 1 - Chaos Fanatic, Shard 2 - Crazy archaeologist, Shard 3 - Scorpia).
In terms of stats, the ward provides melee defence identical to that of a dragon square shield but provides a moderate amount of magic defence instead of providing ranged defence. The shield carries a substantial magic attack bonus but negative melee and ranged attack bonuses. Because of this the shield is suitable for mages, but unsuitable for other combat.
Players can use a ward upgrade kit, obtained from the Bounty Hunter Store, to cosmetically enhance the malediction ward, creating a malediction ward (or). This only alters its appearance, and renders it untradeable. It can be reverted, but the kit will not be retained.
