Pickaxes (often abbreviated as picks) are used to mine any type of ore, essence and some types of blockages in Gielinor. Pickaxes can either be held in the inventory or wielded; but, to wield a pickaxe, the wielder's Attack level must be high enough to wield the metal. Wielding the pickaxe provides extra space in the inventory. This is useful when mining for a profit, as one extra ore can be held.
Higher level pickaxes have a greater chance of obtaining an ore from a rock and thus are generally faster to mine with. However, certain low level rocks become attainable at maximum speed at higher mining levels, even with lower level pickaxes.

- In the early days of RuneScape Classic, there was only one type of pickaxe available, named simply Pickaxe. It looked like a Steel pickaxe and could not be equipped. When different types of pickaxes were released in May 2003, all pickaxes in the bank became the Bronze pickaxes that are commonly found today.
- Before random event update in 2014 there used to be a possibility that players had to repair their pickaxe after it had been damaged during the exploding rock random event. In this situation, players had to visit Nurmof in the Dwarven Mine or Bob at the Lumbridge axe shop to repair it for a small cost. Players may also have had their Pickaxe head fly off their handle, which they then needed to pick up and rejoin to the handle by using the pickaxe head with the pickaxe handle.
- The Black pickaxe is currently the only weightless pickaxe, making it good for questing or for mining ores with low requirements (such as Rune essence).
